WHAT IS THE TUTORING PROGRAM?

Since 1998, the Latino Student Fund’s Tutoring Program provides free support and academic assistance to Washington metropolitan area students to ensure their academic success. The Latino Student Fund (LSF) rapidly and successfully adapted its in-person Saturday one-on-one tutoring program to an online format as a result of social distancing requirements during the COVID-19 crisis.

The Tutoring program reinforces math and English skills for PreK through 12th-grade students. Two initiatives have been designed to provide additional support to students during their one-on-one tutoring sessions. The Native Language Literacy (NLL) Initiative builds students’ literacy skills in their first language, an important developmental step to being able to read well in any language. As a part of this initiative, the LSF has a Multicultural Library, with diverse characters and stories in various languages. In addition to the NLL, the Early Literacy Initiative (ELI) for PreK to third-grade students uses the Orton-Gillingham approach to teach early reading and phonics skills through a multi-sensory structured and sequential instruction based on the relationship between letters and sounds. 

IN-PERSON TUTORING

The LSF Tutoring Program is excited to be fully in-person on Saturdays from 10 am – 12 pm. The one-on-one tutoring sessions are personalized to each student’s grade and assessment level. Students are provided with engaging activities to complete with their tutors in addition to other resources such as Khan Academy. The LSF supplements and provides assignments to support students’ curriculum where possible and provides tools to parents to assist them with distance learning for their child. The LSF’s tutoring program has demonstrated success in several areas, including program participation, student academic achievement, and safe and accommodating program space.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE?

The Tutoring Program is open to all underprivileged students in grades PreK-12. Students must be from the Washington, DC metropolitan area and be enrolled in a public or private school. PreK students must be 4 years old by the start of the program. Spaces are limited, and the Tutoring Program is currently accepting applications for the 2022-23 school year. Applications are accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis.

ADDITIONAL SERVICES FOR ADULTS

**All classes are open to the community but priority is given to parents and family members of students enrolled in the tutoring program.**

English as a Second Language (ESL) Classes

The LSF offers three levels of ESL classes free of charge. Students work in small groups to improve their language skills with an emphasis on English for work environments. Contact tutoringmc@latinostudentfund.org to enroll in an online class!

Computer Literacy Classes

The LSF’s Computer Literacy classes teach adult learners basic computer skills, such as creating an email account and navigating the internet. Throughout the year students have the opportunity to study special topics, like completing online job applications and online safety for children.
