We are always looking for volunteers to help our programs grow. Whether your passion is tutoring, college prep, mentoring a graduating high school senior, or volunteering at one of our many events, we have a program to fit your schedule and goals.
Member Schools
The LSF works with several independent and parochial schools in Washington, DC, Maryland and Virginia to support youth and to encourage multicultural and socioeconomic diversity in PreK-12th grade education. Our efforts are to ensure that youth have access to the best educational opportunities that the Washington, DC Metropolitan area has to offer. LSF Member Schools benefit from the cultural and linguistic support of LSF staff and supporters.

ABOUT THE LSF
The Latino Student Fund (LSF) was founded in 1994 to address disparities in access to education for underrepresented students in Washington, DC, and has since served more than 4,000 youth across its programs.
Our Mission
Provide opportunities for a strong academic foundation for underserved PreK-12th grade students and their families to promote higher education and professional leadership. The organization provides year-round, out-of-school-time programs for low-income, at-risk students and their families with the goal of increasing levels of educational attainment in the community.
ABOUT OUR PROGRAMS
The LSF offers eight programs under three programmatic areas: post-secondary success, academic support, and family resources. These three initiatives work in concert to encourage a college going culture from a young age, while building a strong community that will sustain the program’s successes for generations to come. By providing opportunities for the families to learn alongside their children, the LSF is able to set multiple generations on the path to success.
POST-SECONDARY SUCCESS
• Listo (2010-present): Listo works with 11th –12th grade youth to prepare them academically for postsecondary education and provide them support through the college application and financial aid process. The program includes homework assistance, college application assistance, financial literacy workshops, career counseling, and mentoring. The LSF also hosts a college and scholarship fair and SAT preparation course.
• Listo Rápido (2010 – present): Listo Rapido is a one-week intensive summer college prep course that teaches rising 10th – 12th grade students the basics of the college admissions process. The program provides guided college research, post-secondary admissions, financial aid, and financial literacy workshops, networking with college students and career professionals, a full day college visit and a career day trip to local businesses.
• Te Guio (2016 – present): Created as part of the DC Mayor’s Empowering Males of Color initiative, Te Guio provides youth in 9th – 10th grade with a mentor to guide them on the path to graduate high school, enroll in higher education, and transition to a healthy adulthood. Once students complete the Te Guio program, they are transitioned into the Listo program.
ACADEMIC SUPPORT
• PreK-12 Tutoring program (1998 – present): An out-of-school-time program that provides individualized academic support to help at-risk PreK-12th grade students build proficiency in reading and math each Saturday morning during the school year. The LSF also offers scholarships to summer programs donated by local schools and community organizations.
• Rising Journalist (2019 – present): The Rising Journalist program increases civic engagement in marginalized English Language Learner (ELL) middle school students by improving writing and critical thinking skills.
FAMILY RESOURCES
• Access Program (2011 – present): The Access program provides parent workshops, school fairs and individualized consultations for students applying to independent and parochial schools for grades PreK –12 in the Washington, DC area.
• Computer Literacy class (2015 –present): The computer literacy course provides parents tools to further their career development and allow the LSF to provide cross-program support. Offered in partnership with ByteBack, the course focuses on understanding the computer, typing, emailing, document creation, as well as how to navigate the internet.
• English as a Second Language class (2005 –present): The LSF began offering ESL classes for parents of tutoring students and in recent years opened the classes to members of the community. The three levels of ESL classes aim to increase functional and conversational English, particularly for navigating the school environment, as well as teach parents the methods used in the tutoring program and how to replicate them in any language at home.
